(From 阿蘇駅 Aso train station, take the 産交 Sanko bus http://www.kyusanko.co.jp/sankobus/tozan_sen2/ to 阿蘇山西口駅 Mt. Aso West Exit station which takes 40 mins.  Then change to the ropeway and get off at 火口西 Kako-nishi, which takes another 24 mins.)

Features:
Largest active volcano in Japan with one of the largest calderas in the world
Consists of five peaks - one being Mt. Nakadake
Comments:
The first time I went up there was in Autumn 2007 and there was so much smoke that we couldn't really see anything and neither were we allowed to get to the zones closest to the volcano.  I remembered it was freezing cold!!  My second visit was in Spring 2010 and fortunately got better views and better photos.
