29th October 2011 was the last day opened for visitors before the year-long upgrading project commenced. We made it there coincidentally on the last day although we decided not to visit Liberty Island incase of any crowds but to take the free ferry ride to Staten Island instead, which goes past the Statue of Liberty giving you a good enough view from afar. You can take this ferry from the Staten Island Ferry Pier at the southern tip of the Financial District (South Ferry station: subway line 1; or Whitehall St-South Ferry station: subway line R). Just be sure to grab a spot on the right side of the Ferry (outside) to get an unblocked view when heading to Staten Island.
