Comments:
Tucked away up in a building with no obvious signs, this place was recommended by a friend who heard about the place from a Japanese colleague living in Hong Kong.  Apparently it is not yet listed in Openrice.com but only in the 'HK Post' link above (a Hong Kong news website in Japanese) and according to the website it is the sister branch of the well-known 'Agehan Japanese Restaurant' at Exchange Square in Central.  According to that Japanese colleague the old Agehan chef had moved to the Yasuhan branch.
This tiny restaurant which feels almost like a private kitchen, seats probably only around 15 or so people (rough count) and advance bookings are required.  The head Japanese Chef actually speaks good enough Cantonese so it seemed like he was the only one taking the phone calls there.  His other responsibilities seemed to only be preparing the sashimi and socializing with the customers (he gave us each a complimentary small bottle of Kikkoman soy sauce when we left...funny).
Only the Omakase course is offered which we ended up paying HKD1936 for two people.  I wouldn't say it was either cheap nor too expensive, but the whole course menu did seem like what you would get at a real Japanese restaurant in Japan of similar style.  I wasn't a big fan of the small appetizer dishes that the course started with - the slimy octopus was in some sauce with an acquired taste and I didn't fancy the small white fish either but the tofu served with it was fine.  I liked the selection of sashimi they served and the uni was especially fresh.  One whole 'kinki' fish was served between the two of us and the chef encouraged us to finish every single piece of the fish by scraping it off the bones for us...this is the kind of pressure you sometimes get dining at real Japanese restaurants...you can't waste any bits of your food!  All the hot dishes that followed were all quite good too (not all are shown in the pics below) and although we were extremely full even before the rice and soup came at the end, we managed to finish that as well because the rice was addictive.  The course ended with a delicious and juicy cut of Japanese green melon.
